OpenAI is already developing ChatGPT 6 to avoid being overtaken

Everyone obviously wants the fastest, safest, and coolest car on the highway to the future. That is why OpenAI now has its foot welded to the gas pedal, developing ChatGPT 6 at record speed. But why rush so much – shouldn’t AI that is going to run the world be allowed to take a little more time? Let me offer some perspectives and you can decide for yourselves.

Competition is always right around the corner

OpenAI may be the biggest in the class right now, but the classmates are not exactly shy. Google is pushing forward with Gemini, Anthropic is building Claude, and Elon Musk is putting together his own Grok with some unusual bias. Everyone wants to own the headlines, the corporate customers, and your everyday life. In this situation, it is deadly for OpenAI to stand still, or they cannot stand still because then they will not survive.

ChatGPT 5 was a disappointment even though it is a competent AI model

When GPT5 finally arrived after quite long delays, many expected something spectacular. Instead, there was more of a storm of criticism over the new “routing” feature. Sure, it is better than GPT4, but far from the revolution people pictured in their PowerPoints. The criticism poured in, and what do you do then? Well, you say: “Okay, hold on – ChatGPT6 is coming soon, and this time it will be for real.”

OpenAI probably learned a serious lesson from that whole release, they regroup and realize they need both a show for the market and a product that will storm the market. Having one billion users is not enough… you need more of something else.

New features in ChatGPT 6 mean new money

The most exciting thing about ChatGPT 6 is that it will not only speak intelligently but also remember who you are. It can become a bit like your digital childhood friend – but without asking if you still collect Pokémon cards. There is already a “memory” in ChatGPT 5, but this will be something different and much better. Additionally, there are rumors about agent-like abilities, meaning the AI can solve tasks step by step on its own. This opens up entirely new business areas and revenue streams – and for companies, it means only one thing: start rushing to sell. However, we heard that the agent abilities were supposed to come already in ChatGPT 5. It does have them to a very limited extent, but that function is far from good.

MIT’s new study on AI showed a remarkable fact, those companies (5%) that have succeeded in developing AI services, can maintain focus and do one thing well, are far superior to those trying to do everything and sell everything. This is an old truth and it still holds.

Investors do not like slow development

OpenAI is no longer a cozy research club in a basement. It is a billion-dollar company burning money with its entire data infrastructure. Investors and partners want to see results, headlines, and above all a feeling that OpenAI is not falling behind. Then the pace of development becomes more a matter of finance than technology.

The narrative means more than you think

In the tech world, it’s not just about being the best, but about appearing as the best. If Google wins the narrative of “AI that knows what you need before you even do,” or if Anthropic manages to get the label of “AI you can actually trust” – then OpenAI can quickly start to feel as outdated as a Nokia 3310 at Apple’s first iPhone conference. To avoid this, they must constantly shout “the next version is coming soon and it will blow you away, so hang on tight.”

OpenAI cannot afford to take it easy

OpenAI is currently working at a high pace to develop ChatGPT 6. The reason is clear: in the SaaS market, there is no room to lean back. As more players enter and competition increases, constant innovation is required to retain both market share and user trust. Believing that people and companies are loyal is something you should stop believing in. It is easier to keep them once they have embedded themselves in an infrastructure because migrating to other infrastructures is extremely difficult and costly.

Developing new models and operating them is extremely expensive. The rule of thumb is the more reasoning you use, the more computing power is needed = energy. This might be a weakness for OpenAI right now due to the enormous number of users of their service. Building a highly reasoning all-round model like ChatGPT 6 might be too costly, so maybe they will just dress up the pig again as they did with ChatGPT 5.

Why SaaS companies like OpenAI must be innovative

In the SaaS world, it is not enough to have a good product once. Users constantly expect improvements, new features, and clear steps forward. The development is fast, and customers are continuously comparing the options on the market. If a competitor launches something more usable, safer, or cheaper, loyalty risks disappearing quickly.

Historical examples of companies that lost momentum

Several large tech companies have lost their position when they failed to keep up with development. BlackBerry was long a leader in business phones but lost out when other providers offered more modern solutions. Nokia dominated the mobile market but lost its role when smartphones changed the playing field. Yahoo missed the chance to further develop its search service and was replaced by Google. What these examples have in common is that they stopped improving their products at the same pace as the competition grew.

What companies must do when more players compete

When more companies fight for the same customers, those who want to maintain their position must act quickly. It involves:

  • Delivering continuous innovation with clear improvements
  • Building solutions that integrate smoothly with other systems
  • Listening to the market and meeting real needs
  • Showing that the product is both safe and future-proof

It is not enough to have been first or biggest. In a competitive market, it is always the player who develops fastest and most accurately who gains the advantages.

Difference between large established giants and OpenAI

If one were to compare superficially OpenAI against two of the biggest AI companies which are of course Google and Microsoft largest and see more what they have that OpenAI does not.

Google has enormous data volumes

Google holds one of the world’s largest assets – data. Every search, every YouTube video and every interaction in their ecosystem provides new insights that can be used to train and improve AI models. For OpenAI, access to data is much more limited. They have to buy, license or find collaborations to obtain material. This means Google can train models with greater variety and in some cases more relevance. Google also has enormous infrastructure for B2C and B2B customers with a range of different services.

Microsoft has integrated channels

Microsoft already has a natural distribution platform. Through Office 365, Teams, and the entire Azure cloud, they can roll out AI features directly to hundreds of millions of users. OpenAI has ChatGPT, but outside of that they must rely on integrations or partnerships to reach equally broad usage. The difference is that Microsoft can push a button and launch a feature in Word, Excel, and Outlook, whereas OpenAI must convince customers to actively come to their platform.

Financial muscle and resources

Google and Microsoft are among the world’s most capital-strong companies. They have the resources to build their own data centers, develop their own chips and hire tens of thousands of engineers. OpenAI is large in the AI world but significantly smaller in size. They depend on partnerships – not least with Microsoft – to be able to scale up at the same pace.

Brand and trust

Google and Microsoft are already established names both in the corporate world and among consumers. They have deeper trust when it comes to security, stability, and long-term commitment. OpenAI is still relatively new, and although they have become well known in a short time, they lack the same history that makes large companies dare to invest fully without hesitation.

Will ChatGPT 6 take us by storm?

OpenAI is agile, innovative, and has created one of the most famous AI products in the world. But compared to Google and Microsoft, they lack large datasets, distribution channels, financial resources, and the long-term trust that the major players have already built up. However, ChatGPT 6 must deliver something extra extra, whether they can do that remains to be seen. With the little information I have about the new model, it does not currently feel like another big leap. But I believe and hope that they have learned from the ChatGPT 5 release and will make sure that the next AI model is a slammer.
