ChatGPT instant checkout enables direct purchases within the model

OpenAI has launched the Instant Checkout feature, which means you no longer just get shopping tips from ChatGPT – you can also let it click home the items for you. The launch takes place in the USA, where users can shop from Etsy and soon also from over a million Shopify stores such as Glossier, SKIMS, and Spanx. Initially, it applies to individual products, but multi-purchases and more regions are on the way.

It is free for you as a user, but merchants pay a small fee to OpenAI for each completed transaction. And no, the AI does not prioritize stores that have paid more, the results are still organic and based on relevance. Or will they factor in monetary elements in the future to increase visibility for certain companies? In such a strong market economy, it would not surprise me considering that OpenAI needs to bring in quite a lot of money given how much they actually operate at a loss.

How does it work technically?

Behind the scenes, there is something called Agentic Commerce Protocol, developed together with Stripe. It is an open standard protocol that allows AI, humans, and stores to speak the same language in order to complete a purchase. For merchants, this means they don’t have to overhaul their systems; the integration can be as simple as a line of code.

When you place an order, ChatGPT only passes on the necessary information to the merchant’s system. The actual payment takes place with the merchant, who is also responsible for delivery, customer support, and any returns.

Security and trust in focus

OpenAI emphasizes that everything is based on trust. You confirm every step yourself, the payment is made with encrypted tokens, and only absolutely necessary data is shared with the merchant. It is roughly like having a very disciplined personal shopper who never cheats with the receipt.

Stripe, one of the largest payment platforms in the world, supports the technology. They call it “building the economic infrastructure for AI,” a kind of digital highway for the future of shopping.

Advantages and risks with AI e-commerce

Advantages

  • Super convenient – you don’t have to click around yourself.
  • Merchants get new channels to reach customers.
  • Based on open standards that can grow quickly.

Risks

  • Power is concentrated in AI platforms that can control what you see.
  • Privacy issues, even though the data is limited, who really holds the reins?
  • The technology is new and untested at scale, bugs and misuse may occur.

How purchases will be shifted for e-commerce merchants

E-commerce is facing a major makeover, and the question is no longer if AI will change the way we shop but how quickly. With ChatGPT as an intermediary, we will soon no longer need to google, compare prices, or even log into a webshop. Instead, we can simply say “Buy a new coffee machine” and the order will be placed within seconds.

But the future of shopping is not just about convenience. If purchases happen directly in the chat, with an AI assistant that already knows our habits, the platform also becomes the new marketplace. Instead of going to Amazon, Zalando, or Elgiganten, you might never leave ChatGPT or similar services in the future. The AI itself becomes the marketplace.

This could mean that traditional e-commerce giants lose control over the customer journey. Instead, their role becomes to “plug in” to AI protocols like Agentic Commerce so they don’t get left out. The winners will be the companies that manage to appear in AI assistants’ recommendations – just as SEO ruled the Google era, “AIO” (AI Optimization?) could become the next big buzzword.

And further ahead? Then you might not even need to ask for anything. Your AI already knows when your socks are worn out or your coffee beans are running low, and orders new ones for you before you’ve even noticed the need. Convenient? Absolutely. Scary? Yes, a bit like having a mother-in-law living in your phone.

The future of e-commerce is therefore not a place you surf to, it is a conversation you have. And the question is who you are really talking to: yourself, your AI, or the merchant hiding behind the code.
