AtlasOS makes Windows faster than you thought possible

Microsoft and Windows have a relationship like a subscription you never remember signing up for but can’t get rid of. Updates that restart your computer in the middle of a meeting, telemetry that reports home what you’re doing, and ads baked into the Start menu. Fortunately, there’s a group of enthusiastic developers who got tired and created AtlasOS, an optimized version of Windows that actually respects you as a user.

What is AtlasOS really

AtlasOS is not an entirely new operating system. It is a modification of Windows 11 that cleans up what Microsoft doesn’t want to clean up: background processes, unnecessary telemetry, ads, and bloatware. The result is a Windows that actually feels light and fast again, a bit like finding an old favorite sweater that hasn’t shrunk in the wash.

The project is open source, licensed under GPL-3.0, and has thousands of stars on GitHub. It is reviewed, transparent, and free. Everything is visible for anyone who wants to look under the hood.

What happens with performance

Here it starts to get interesting. Compared to a regular Windows 11 release, AtlasOS frees up about 1.5 GB of RAM right at startup. Background CPU usage drops dramatically, from constant peaks to virtually zero when the computer is idle. In games like Valorant, tested with a Ryzen 7 5800X3D and RTX 2070 Super, the average frame rate has gone from 217 FPS to 365 FPS.

This is not negligible. It is the difference between losing and winning.

The startup time shrinks to under ten seconds on a SATA SSD, compared to over 30 seconds on a regular Windows. Games load levels 20 to 30 percent faster thanks to reduced disk load.

Privacy without compromise

Microsoft collects data. It’s not a conspiracy, it’s their business model. AtlasOS disables the telemetry that Windows sends home, removes pre-installed apps, and stops Cortana and Bing from being present without an invitation.

Those who are tired of Windows feeling like a digital spy in their own home will appreciate what AtlasOS does without requiring advanced technical knowledge.

Used by real professionals

It’s not just home users who have tested it. Professional Valorant players like Mistic and al0rante use AtlasOS to ensure a stable and low-latency environment during competitions. Milliseconds can decide matches, and every system interruption is a potential loss.

Linus Sebastian from Linus Tech Tips summarized it accurately: if you can run Windows with this performance, it’s hard to argue for sticking with the standard installation.

Who is AtlasOS for

AtlasOS is perfect for gamers, those who care about their privacy, and anyone who has had enough of Windows feeling like an old tractor despite new hardware. It also fits owners of older computers. One user reported that a portable HP from 2016 went from 3 to 6 frames per second in games to 109 FPS after installation.

However, it requires following an installation guide carefully and being prepared that there is no simple undo button. If you want to go back, you need to reinstall Windows from scratch, just as you would need to do to install AtlasOS from the beginning.

Security and safety

A common question is how security stands when Windows is cleaned of services. AtlasOS allows the user to choose the level. Defender can be left on, firewalls can be configured, and security updates are still applied. It is not a cowboy OS but a configurable Windows where the user determines the balance between performance and protection.

The project follows Microsoft’s terms, does not distribute any modified ISO files, and has been reviewed with no known malicious components found.

How to get started

Installation is done through an official installation document available on the AtlasOS website. It is used along with the AME Wizard, a tool that applies the AtlasOS configuration to a clean Windows installation. The process takes some time but is well-structured and documented step by step.

The latest version is Atlas v0.5.0 from October 2025 and supports Windows 11.
